How Have I Grown This Year?

I think that this year I have made progress understanding my artistic preferences. I have formed new opinions about art that shape every piece of work that I produce. This year I learned more about the importance of the composition of a painting. A strong composition is what differentiates a painting from a simple design. Throughout the year I have made improved my skills with different materials, specifically acrylic paint and graphite. This year I have learned that it is important for a piece of work to represent an idea or message instead of just looking nice.

Artist Statement

My strengths include creativity and attention to detail. I enjoy finding different ways of representing objects in many different mediums. I prefer working with wet medium but I also enjoy working with graphite and charcoal pencils. I enjoy working with both watercolor and acrylic paints, I would also like to begin working with oil paints.

My greatest weakness is correctly showing space and value in my work. I can work on that by practicing different methods of showing space and value. Those methods include shading and foreshortening.

My goals this year include improving my drawing and painting techniques. I will try and reach my goals by painting and drawing a lot. This year, I want to focus on improving my painting techniques and begin working with oil paints.

My biggest brick wall is my lack of patience. I tend to be really impatient with my work if it doesn’t look like I intended it to.
